I’ve been an athlete and involved in some form of sport or training since age 5. Fast forward 22 years, and I find myself with a torn ACL, MCL, and about 90% of the cartilage in my right knee. My immediate thoughts were that I would no longer have the ability to exercise, train or live the active lifestyle that I had known and lived my entire life. I was referred to Dr. Berman of the Arlington Orthopedics Group after discovering that my situation was more severe than my primary practitioner expected, and that’s when my journey to regaining my ‘life’ back. After meeting with Dr. Berman and reviewing the damage discovered on the MRI, it was then that we discussed the options that were available for me. Dr. Berman and Andrea (Dr. Berman’s Assistant) were very informative and thorough in the explanation of the pros and cons, of both the long and short term options I had with attempting to fix my knee and get me back to living the life I desired. Dr. Berman informed me that I would be a great candidate for the ACI procedure (a relatively new procedure that requires the extraction of the existing cartilage cells to be grown and implanted at a later date) that would give me the best chance at long term sustainable repair and increased level of mobility. After making the decision to move forward with the procedure, Andrea got me all set up for the two part operation that would get me closer to getting back on my feet.
Following the first round of surgery, I found myself in great care and comfort amongst the entire staff within the Physical Therapy Clinic. Within a few rigorous PT sessions they had my strength and flexibility slowly building itself up. Then the time finally came for the ‘BIG DAY’, when I went in the second phase of the operation. I arrived to a warm welcome and before I knew it I was awaking to the comfort of the delightful staff at the surgical center. Now that the surgery was over…it was finally time to get to work. I would arrive every other day at the Physical Therapy Center, and meet with Stephanie Strong (Physical Therapist) who challenged me to progress a little more each day than I did before. Within 12 weeks I was able to do more than I had in the previous 3 months prior to surgery. I can’t say enough about the positive experience I had each day while in the company of the staff at Arlington Orthopedics. Each day brought new challenge and each day I was able to get better. It has now been 2 years since my surgery date and I am proud to say that I can engage and participate in every single activity the I could prior to injury. I have been able to complete a 10K, agility drill on the turf, full court basketball, and so much more. It’s because of the people at Arlington Orthopedics and the wealth of knowledge and support I received, that I was able to regain my life back. I am truly appreciative and Dr. Berman, Andrea, and the entire staff, without them I am not sure I would have been able to get back to where I am today.
